Started by Dr. Terrell "T-Bone" Buchananin 1967, the Brazos Valley Equine Hospital is headquartered in Navasota, Texas.  The current facility was built in 1988; additions and upgrades completed in 1994, 1997 and 2006 have expanded the hospital to its current 25,000 square foot facility with pens/stalls for 50 equine patients.

This panoramic view of Brazos Valley Equine Hospital shows (from the left) the office, exam area, outpatient barn, and new barn. The gravel area in front is used for lameness evaluations. The office is located on the left as you drive into the facility. Please check in and register your horse before you unload. Clients are greeted in the main office where they check in and register their horses. Catlin sets up a horses blood work in the lab. The laboratory at the Brazos Valley Equine Hospital can perform many advanced laboratory tests and bacterial cultures. Shelves full of the most up to date journals and text books help to keep us on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. However plenty of shelf and wall space is reserved for the many win pictures we receive every month. We can’t wait to see yours! A viewing station in the conference room allows us to review in high detail digital images produced in our x-ray room, as well as, digital images taken by other veterinarians and stored on CDs. This horse waits patiently in x-ray for his exam to be completed. Note the computer on the left used for the digital system and the light board on the right used to evaluate traditional plain films. Dr. Marty Tanner corrects an umbilical hernia while Dr. Miranda Gosselin observes. Almost every basic and advanced surgery is performed by the surgeons at the Brazos Valley Equine Hospital including arthroscopies and colic surgery. Dr. Terrell “T-Bone” Buchanan injects a horses hocks with steroids and hyaluronic acid in the primary exam room. This outpatient exam room is used for lameness exams, pre-purchase evaluations, and physical exams. Dr. Ben Buchanan scopes a horses stomach with the flexible 3 meter video endoscope in the second exam room while visiting surgeon Dr. Fernando Castro helps. Dr. Wyatt Winchell observes a horse jogging on the gravel in front of the clinic during a lameness exam. Each year doctors at the Brazos Valley Equine Hospital looks at over 10,000 lame horses providing you with the expertise that only comes from practice. The original barn is an outpatient barn to provide a place for horses to wait with clean water and hay instead of on the trailer. An eleven stall open side barn includes three extra large stalls for mare and foals or very large horses. This barn has the lights on a timer to help synchronize mares in the late fall and winter. There are 6 covered dirt paddocks to house horses and 2 grass paddocks to allow horses to graze. The outdoor pens face the bedroom and living room windows of the veterinary interns who live at the clinic allowing for round the clock foaling watch of pregnant mares. The “new” barn consists of 17 stalls including three extra large stall and a free standing four stall climate controlled ICU. This hallway houses hospitalized patients. This exterior hallway of the “new” barn houses the intermediate level of patients to allow for isolation, fluid therapy, and monitoring. The ICU is climate controlled with a special air circulation and composed of four stalls and a padded floor. The floor and the walls are coated in a impermeable agent to prevent bacterial growth. The ICU contains many specialized pieces of equipment and a nurses station to provide intensive therapy and round the clock monitoring of the most critical cases. Dual chambered fluid pumps allow for tight regulation of medications including insulin, intravenous nutrition, pain medications, and anti-inflammatories. A large stall in the original barn has been converted to an adjustment stall where James Becker flexes a horse neck before adjusting his cervical vertebrae. Cody Morgan use the air powered hydraulic floats to correct dental abnormalities in a performance horse. A permanent system is installed in the second exam room along with a complete set of dental equipment. Quinn Hansen evaluates and trims a foot for shoe placement. The doctors at Brazos Valley Equine Hospital work closely with farriers. Quinn and his staff see podiatry appointments once a week. Quinn Hansen’s horse shoeing trailer provides him specialized tools and a forge for creating shoes to correct serious foot abnormalities. Thank you for taking this tour of our hospital.
